Previous Scholarship Awards and Program Impact
The Nursing Student Retention Scholarship Program (NSRSP) is no longer accepting applications. This page remains available to recognize prior scholarship recipients and to document the program’s workforce impact.

The NSRSP was established by the Office of Nursing Workforce to help address Mississippi’s nursing shortage by supporting nursing students and nurses pursuing nursing degrees within the state. The program was designed to encourage recipients to complete their nursing education and remain in Mississippi’s nursing workforce.

Program Outcomes
The program awarded $100,000 in scholarship support to 24 Mississippi nursing students and nurses, representing a meaningful investment in nursing education, workforce development, and healthcare access in Mississippi. To date, 17 of the 24 recipients successfully completed the program requirements, resulting in a 70.8% completion rate. Because each recipient was required to practice nursing in Mississippi for three years, the program generated at least 51 years of nursing service in the state.

Estimated Workforce Return on Investment
Based on Mississippi median nursing salary estimates, the nursing service completed by successful recipients represents an estimated $3 million or more in nursing workforce wage impact over the required three-year service obligation period.

When compared to the original $100,000 scholarship investment, this reflects an estimated workforce wage impact of approximately $30 for every $1 invested in scholarship support.

These estimates are based on available recipient completion data and Mississippi median nursing salary information. They are intended to reflect workforce wage impact and should not be interpreted as a formal economic impact study.
