It is within the scope of practice of the appropriately prepared registered nurse to pronounce death provided:
- There is documentation that the registered nurse has the knowledge and skills to perform this procedure;
- The patient is not connected to or dependent upon a life support device;
- There has been contact with the medical provider regarding the patient’s care within the preceding thirty days;
- The registered nurse is the most qualified person available; and
- The facility has policies and procedures in place addressing all aspects of this issue.
It is not within the scope of practice of the licensed practical nurse to pronounce death or certify death.
